LGBTQ migrants are at the crossroads of racist and anti-migrant and trans- and homophobic attitudes and legislation. LGBTQ people suffer epidemic levels of sexual, verbal, physical and psychological violence in migratory detention in AZ. Many detained community members do not have any outside support.

Yesenia Palencia is a lesbian woman who escaped an abusive past in El Salvador, seeking  a better life for herself and her children in the U.S. She was instead detained in Eloy Detention Center in Arizona where she has been for about a year. As a lesbian, Yesenia faces abuse and violence at Eloy, including an incidence of sexual assault. The complaint she filed as received no attention from officials. She has since faced harassment from officers and fears that the situation may grow worse.

Yesenia dreams of getting out of Eloy and continuing her life here in the United States. She wishes to bring her children from El Salvador and unify her familia. Yesenia wants to join LGBTQ migrant community to help fellow detainees as the community is helping her.

Yesenia is awaiting a bond decision. A donation of even 5 dollars will help her prepare to get out as fast as possible. All funds raised will be saved for her bond. Remaining funds will be available for her post detention needs and/or to pay bonds for other detained LGBTQ migrants, according to Yesenia’s wishes.

The Arcoíris Liberation Team is a Phoenix based organization that supports our LGBTQ community in detention with letters and fundraising to pay bonds, and organizes LGBTQ migrant community to end detention and build social justice.
