Edible Forest Gardens Intensive

Hi!

My name is Liam Oakwood.  As the son of a field ecologist and an adventurer I've been running about in the bush for as long as I can remember, in many of the different biomes that can be found in Australia. I feel at home in the natural world. It has it's own peace, clarity, and truth.

As we all know, this world is increasingly under threat. After a journey that has spanned the earth and environmental sciences, bush regeneration, and spatial information science, I feel I'm coming to a practise with true transformational potential.

Permaculture and edible forest gardening have the potential to address so many of the issues that face us. By producing abundant food where we live, and restoring the land rather then degrading it, we can begin to engage with the Earth as stewards and regenerators rather then consumers.

It began when I moved to a wonderful property in Brunswick East, Australia. With over fifty edible and medicinal plant species, there is something to harvest at all times of year. The practice of harvesting seasonal abundance and preserving it goes hand in hand with the cultivation and restoration of the soil.

Soon afterwards I completed a Permaculture Design Course in the lush hill suburb of Tecoma. This drew together all my strands of concern and ideas and forged them into a collection of solid plans for action.

Currently, I am volunteering with propagation at the CERES environment centre as well working on getting the hothouse here restored to propagate trees and annuals to share the edible abundance throughout our neighbourhood and beyond!

But I want to take this further. Next year a world renowned Forest Gardener, David Jacke, is running a nine day Forest Garden Design Intensive near Ballarat. If I could attend and deepen my learning, it would allow me to go that much further in designing self-regulating forest gardens, and to spread that knowledge within my community.

I'm aiming to use the community supported education model provided by the trainers, wherein I utilise my new skills to give back to the community after I finish the course. Check out the rewards section for details!

I'm willing to travel anywhere to provide the rewards as long as travel costs are covered! For Melbourne and Sydney/Newcastle/North Coast NSW there wont be any significant travel costs as I can potentially raise plants in each location and then travel there to do designs within a contiguous time period, rather then lots of short trips :)
