My Walk - Mental Health Awareness

Donation protected
Dan Chapman (40) is traveling from Maine to California on foot in order to raise awareness for Mental Health and suicide prevention

After losing his job in 2010, Dan went into another depression.  This depression led to a significant weight gain where eventually he was put into a forced coma in May of 2014 with a diabetes issue where his blood sugar number was an astounding 1,440.  At that time, Dan weighed close to 300 pounds.

Dan has tracked his rough years and said that he felt like he was struggling with a case of depression most of his life, including at the age of 13, ages 20-25, and ages 32-36, Dan said it was so hard to get out of bed and he didn't care about anything. Dan commented about his time before being admitted to the hospital, "I didn't care if I lived or died...I knew I was sick, but I didn't tell anyone and I kept eating and drinking stuff...it's hard to talk about."

On top of these struggles, in October of 2015, Dan lost his father in the middle of the night.  Dan was by his side while he was taking his last breathes.  An apparent case of heart failure, Dan's dad (Dale) passed away minutes after the episode.  Dale had also struggled with mental health issues for years and never addressed them the way that they needed to be addressed.

Dan decided enough was enough.  He went on a journey to not only be healthier with his body, but also with his mind.  Dan started walking tens of thousands of steps a day in order to get exercise.  All of these steps were done on a treadmill or around his mom's house, where he takes care of his mom (Lynda).

In April 2016, Dan decided to challenge himself to a 1,000,000 step month, which would require an average of 33,333 steps a day.

The goal was accomplished with 32,000+ to spare. Dan is now down to almost 200 pounds and is feeling like a new man!

After much thought, Dan felt like he needed to take the next challenge.  This one he wanted to create an awareness for mental health and felt like he need to do something that was beyond himself.  For Dan, he felt like a walk across the United States was what he needed to do.
