Amputee to Launch Solo Cross-Country Bicycle Tour
FAIRFAX, CA  -- Author, speaker and athlete Niki Rellon will launch a solo bicycle trip from Fairfax, California, on Sunday, June 3rd, 2018, with an unusual dream. She intends to be the first woman to ride a bike across the United States unsupported, on a prosthetic leg. June 3rd is International World Bicycle Day, and Ms. Rellon will start her ride from The Marin Museum of Bicycling in Fairfax. Her website www.nikirellon.com includes a detailed map of her coast-to-coast route, and she is inviting people to meet her along the way. Niki Rellon’s life as an extreme athlete almost ended after a canyoneering accident in 2013 caused her to lose her leg. She refused to give up on what she loves most in life, adventure. Fourteen months after her accident, she became the first woman to walk the entire Appalachian Trail, 2200 miles, on a prosthetic leg. Doctors had told her that her sporting days were over but, she said, she would not be content “moving about in a wheelchair, taking opioids for pain.” Prior to her accident, German-born Rellon had by the age of 39 made solo bicycle tours from Alaska to Mexico City and through Europe. She had walked the entire Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada and had excelled as an amateur triathlete. Among the pursuits and accomplishments that she lists are: professional boxer with German and European championships; world champion in kickboxing; certified Ski Patrol and ski instructor; sky diver; scuba diver; lifeguard; trained EMT and paramedic. She became a US Citizen in 2010 and currently lives in Denver. Her accident, a 45-foot fall from the side of a Utah mountain, caused life-threatening injuries. Her recently published book, Push On: My Walk to Recovery on the Appalachian Trail, is a memoir of that injury, her revitalization process and her ultimate recovery on one of the longest walks in North America. The book tells her story of determination and resolve, and of what she calls “Trail Magic”: unexpected assistance from helpful strangers. Rellon wrote the book, she said, to inspire others "to never give in to your circumstances, even when facing impossible odds." Rellon plans to tell her story along her route, with motivational talks and book signings.  Rellon is having a custom-made titanium bike built by Dean Bikes in Boulder, CO, to suit her needs as a long-distance amputee rider. Rellon will be hosted in Marin County for ten days prior to her launch by Linda Hetzel, a former bicycle tour leader for American Youth Hostels. Rellon uses a German-made electromagnetic medical device, BEMER, to assist with her energy, recovery, and regeneration and to optimize her strength and endurance. Hetzel and other colleagues who use BEMER seek to locate friends for Rellon to stay with on her trip where she will also be able to use this device. Rellon plans to tell her story along her route, with motivational talks and book signings.

June 1st -  Motivational Talk and book signing at Copperfield’s Books in San Rafael, 6 PM

June 3rd  - Trip Launch at Marin Museum of Bicycling, Fairfax, during the museum's first outdoor “BeerBQue” of the year. Noon to 2 PM, $10 for food & drink; separate museum admission.
