This summer Emily and I, alongside a group of other students, will be volunteering in rural Fiji supporting the charitable organisation Think Pacific Foundation (https://thinkpacific.com/ ).
During our one-month project we will experience tough and challenging conditions as we volunteer to deliver a government backed programme to inspire children living in hardship.
Your money will be funding vital school and sport resources for communities and schools supported by Think Pacific to ensure that every team makes a significant and sustainable contribution to the poorest rural villages in Fiji. Every team visits a different Fijian village to leave a legacy, achieving be-spoke building, youth and sports development aims. Your money also funds scholarships, training courses and apprenticeships for Fijian people.
Why Think Pacific?
While Fiji is one of the most beautiful places in the Pacific Ocean, it also struggles with extreme poverty issues. 75% of children grow up below the poverty line. Emily and I both wholeheartedly believe that every child in the world should have access to an education, particularly the all important early years education which can heavily impact the education that follows. Sadly, only 5% of children in Fiji receive this.
Think Pacific is focused on delivering high quality education and youth development, often in difficult circumstances. We could not be more excited to be working one-on-one with children in English and Maths, leading and taking part in extra-curricular activities and sports, all whilst being immersed in traditional village life.
Unlike many volunteer charities, Think Pacific only focuses on one country... Fiji. This means that the schools are supported and provided with teacher training (both academic and sports coaching) and supplies long after we have returned home, a feature of the charity we particularly love! Fijian villages who want to host volunteers are currently on a five year waiting list, which really highlights how highly commended and respected TP is, even in rural Fiji!
Since late 2009, TP has supported over 20,000 children. There has been a 15% increase in school attendance, a 40% increase in literacy and, staggeringly, a 600% increase in sports! Of course, Fiji is a rugby and netball loving nation, so this fits well with Emily and I as we too have a strong passion for these two sports.
We are working hard to help raise the required funds for the Think Pacific Foundation, this spring we plan to complete a 10k run alongside charity events we intend to host.
By taking part on this expedition we will be able to make a meaningful contribution to the lives of many Fijian children, using our coaching and teaching experiences to do this, whilst being immersed in an exciting and unique culture.
