June 23rd is the 8th annual For The Health Of It fundraiser held by the Cancer Support Service through Holy Cross Medical Center. This year we will be raising money in honor of Alexander Bennett, Luke Martinez Jr., and Jennifer Vigil Ortega.
Alex Bennett works with New Mexico State Police in Taos, NM. Due to the location of his tumor his best choice for treatment was MD Anderson in Houston, Tx. He went through two thoracic surgeries and was given the diagnosis of Spindle Cell Sarcoma in September of 2017. Alex then received 8 rounds of chemotherapy, his last finishing the end of April. When informed about the upcoming race, just two weeks out from chemotherapy, Alex decided he would train for the 5k in hopes of raising money for the organization that helped his family when they needed it most.
Luke Martinez, a son, husband, brother, father, friend, and grandpa was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer in May of 2017. Since his diagnosis he has undergone chemotherapy. Although it has been successfull, he continues to battle his cancer with the support of family and friends.
Jennifer Vigil Ortega is a beloved ER nurse at Holy Cross Medical Center. Although her fight is ongoing, she never fails to show courage and strength.
All proceeds raised will be donated to the Cancer Support System where the money will stay local and be distributed to families who have been effected by cancer. They offer multiple services such as: health care navigation, support groups, house cleaning, massage, acupuncture, and assistance with transportation and lodging to name a few.
