App to Help Police, Fire, EMS

You’ve had a long day, maybe you’ve seen some things you wish you never had. What do you do? Talk to friends, family, co-workers? If it’s bad enough, you can go to a therapist and know that you will get the help you need and you can move forward with your life. You may never have another experience that will require therapy.

If you are a first responder – fire, police, ems, corrections or dispatcher – it’s not that simple. Talking to your friends and family is difficult, they don’t understand what you’re experiencing and frankly, you’d rather not upset them. Although co-workers may be going through the same thing, there is a risk that you will be seen as inadequate or, it may hurt your chances of promotion; the stigma may overshadow any healing. Can you call a therapist? Do you know where to start? Many first responders don’t.

We want to change that. We want to provide a central database for first responders so that they can access specialized emotional and spiritual help across the country. We want them to be quickly, easily and confidentially directed to resources that can help they find the right course of action. Someone who is trained to help them or help them understand their benefits and match them with the proper help.

In addition to assisting first responders find the appropriate help, we will be collecting data about first responder suicide and post-traumatic stress. We are encouraging first responders to share their experiences with us so that we can use the statistics to change legislation and improve the lives of first responders.

This will be the first project of this kind, statistics about first responder suicide and post-traumatic stress are not readily available. We want to change that. Unless the information is available, we cannot convince health care providers, leadership or the general public that there is a need for focused, compassionate improvement of workmen’s compensation benefits and specialized training for first responders and their mental health providers.

1stHelp is the first tool of it's kind, a searchable database dedicated to finding emotional, financial and religious assistance for first responders. In addition to assisting first responders in finding crisis-specific help, it will collect suicide and traumatic-stress events. This information will be used to save and improve the quality of lives of first responders.

Who are we? Friends, family members and first responders with a varying degree of education and experience. Our common passion is providing first responders with support and understanding.

Why? Because it needs to start somewhere, we have chosen to volunteer our time into this effort in the hope that it will make the mental health of first responders a priority.

Is the personal information (names, email addresses, etc.) about suicide and traumatic-stress confidential? Yes. Any personal information you enter about your traumatic-stress will not be shared with your family, department or other agencies. It is solely for our files in case we want to clarify a detail or validate your information. We want to provide statistics to save other lives, not provide a vehicle to condemn yours.
