No FGM Oz restoration fund
At the moment the surgery developed by Pierre Foldes is not available in Australia but we have been approached by a surgeon who has worked with people who have injured or abnormal genitals requiring reconstruction.
The surgeon has agreed to provide his services via Medicare, however there are some out of pocket expenses for the cost of tests and other procedures which are required.
We have a survivor of FGM who is very keen to be the first patient to have clitoral reconstruction however is unable to afford the out of pocket expenses.
We are asking for donations to help cover her out of pocket expenses.
We are continuing towards our goal of having a surgeon in Australia trained in clitoral restoration. In the meantime we are working with survivors on the path to being the first patients in Australia to undergo the procedure. FGM survivors must work hard with counsellors to help heal the emotional and psychological scars that are also left by the act of female genital mutilation.
The physical healing is part of the journey and we are very grateful to all who are helping survivors in Australia to access this potentially life-changing operation.
Paula and the team at No FGM Australia
We are excited to be seeing a rising interest in bringing the clitoral surgery which was pioneered by Dr Pierre Foldes, to Australia.
Today I was contacted by a plastic surgeon who said he is willing to fly to France to learn how to do the clitoral reconstruction. We also heard that there is a possibility that Pierre Foldes himself may be able to come to Australia.
Thank you to everyone for your ongoing generosity, we are still working towards our goal to help cover out of pocket costs for the medical procedures.
The possibility for life-changing reconstruction is getting closer to a reality.
Although the clitoral restoration technique designed by Pierre Foldes is still not available, there are other procedures which allow some reconstruction of the clitoral tissue.
Please share our campaign with friends as we are still short of the amount we will need for one survivor to access a procedure which will help her have improved sexual function. Thanks
We have now been approached by more survivors of FGM who have heard that there may be options previously unknown to them.
We have one survivor who is bravely forging the path for others to follow so that all women who have suffered injuries to their clitoris and labia are able to maximise their potential to experience normal sexual pleasure and bodily functions.
Although we still do not have access to the surgery developed by Pierre Foldes, we are at least finding options which we previously did not know were available to survivors in Australia.
We hope that these are the first steps towards getting closer to our goal of training an Australian surgeon in the technique of clitoral restoration.
We could not have done it without the generosity of supporters to the fundraising campaign.
Thank you so much for making this possible
