Feed Families Healthier with DUFB

Hello, I am Frewin Osteen, the “Market Manager” for the North Mobile County (NoMoCo) Food Park and Market. Although the above video highlights the national program, we are raising funds to support our local program in Southern Alabama.

As a social worker for the past 30 years, I have assisted hundreds of families, many with young children, elderly and or disabled, living on low to moderate incomes. Most relying on Food Stamps or SNAP to put food on their tables. However, not every meal they can afford is a healthy or nutritious meal.

Imagine trying to feed your family on $367 a month. This is the maximum a family of 2 is eligible to receive in food assistants in Alabama. Consider the hardship of trying to live on $12.33 a day for a month for just one person. How much harder is it to feed yourself and your young child on that amount. With your donation we have an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the families that literally survive on SNAP to eat each day.
NoMoCo, with our state-wide partnerships, are fortunate to introduce the Double Up Food Bucks program to residents of Southern Alabama. For every dollar you donate the program receives another dollar in matching funds. For every SNAP dollar spent at the market, families receive an additional dollar to purchase locally grown fruits or produce. Local farmers and growers double their sales helping the local economy. Your donation to the Double Up Food Bucks program increases every SNAP participant’s buying power by 100%.

Our first market day for the season is Saturday May 19, 2018. With your donation we can implement the Double Up Food Bucks on our opening day. We need to meet our initial goal of $1,000.00 to ensure that as many families as we can serve on our first market day get the most fruits and vegetables possible.

The reason having Double Up Food Bucks in this community mean so much to me is that it offers families the ability to consume more and include healthier food choices in their daily diet. Having good healthy and nutritious food, in the form of locally grown fruits and produce, provides life changing food choices alternatives to people who otherwise simply go without. This is the driving force behind my interest in seeing Double Up Food Bucks a success in this community.
