War, Ebola and the Crisis of youth in Sierra Leone
Ten Years of Civil War and 2 years of EBOLA EPIDEMIC in Sierra Leone, has had a significant impact on young people. 99.9% of youth described the Ebola crisis as “worse than the war”

We appear to know the number of deaths caused by Ebola but the socio-economic consequences are unclear. Many analysts and international organisations have warned of the disastrous ramifications for the countries worst affected. For example, in Sierra Leone, the projected economic growth for 2014 has decreased from 11.3% to 4% in the wake of the crisis. Initial data from a World Bank mobile phone survey indicates that employment in urban areas has declined from 75% to 67%.

The humanitarian efforts and resilience of the youth

The youth have shown incredible resilience in the face of this crisis. All across the country, they have been involved in every facet of the fight against this unforgiving virus.
The youths in Sierra Leone won’t be getting any medals. Most of them will try to return to a normal life. But life will not be normal anytime soon, even as the Ebola crisis comes to an end, given the many challenges that lie ahead. But hopefully they will be remembered and recognised for their heroic efforts and help pave the way for youth to shape responses to future disasters.

FC Kellie is a NON-PROFIT  Organisation which uses the power of football as a vehicle for the advancement of health, education and enterprise in deprived areas of Sierra Leone. We are developing a model centered around using football and its popularity for the benefit of all within communities.


There are many ways we believe sport can be a huge tool for community’s development.

On an initial level we believe that team sports such as football can play a pivotal role in teaching essential life skills such as communication, leadership, motivation, discipline and helps give young people a focus, keeping them from the temptation of drugs and alcohol, both of which are major problems in certain areas of Africa. Within our model we’ve developed in Sierra Leone, we’re developing a Leadership program where our players learn about being role models and highlight the importance of goal setting, education and helping within the community.

We use our team as a vehicle for engagement with other members of the local area and aim to help and support them with healthcare, finance and education.

Nelson Mandela once said : “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to unite in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair. It is more powerful than governments in breaking down racial barriers. It laughs in the face of all types of discrimination“.

We too believe in the power of football for social development.

“In a community, a small community, where boys and girls like to run around from sunrise to sunset in the dusty ground I could see from afar boys playing soccer. They played like it was not just a game but something enjoyable, running around the dusty ground kicking that ball, the players don’t mind the dust, a goal comes their way and they dance, even their jump for a goal shows determination that one day they shall fly beyond and they shall play and kick the ball to the moon. ‘Africa On The Ball’ a team that does not play to earn, a team to teach through sport a team to help a child see what life can hold despite its ups and downs. Just like the players smile so is how beautiful life can be…”


FC Kellie is a non-profit organization whose mission is to:
• Provide basic armenities for the youth in Sierra Leone
Food
Good Water
Health
Education.
* Provide youth with organized competition in a safe environment
• Bring our youth closer together through common interest in sportsmanship and competition
• instil the values of education
• Acquaint the players with the fundamentals of the game rules; running, kicking, blocking and tackling • Teach sportsmanship, discipline and love of the game
• Encourage the players to maintain satisfactory grades in school and to emphasize the importance of keeping a proper relationship and balance between scholastic and athletic endeavours.
We are looking for sponsors who are willing to donate any amount or equipment to assist in covering our major expenses such as field rental, officials, equipment, transportation, insurance, trophies and administrative cost. One of the greatest feelings in the world is knowing that we as individual can make a difference.


It was clear things would be different. The civil war legacy in Sierra Leone exacerbated the Ebola outbreak.
