Family Service Day

Last spring I asked myself the questions, "How do I raise a child that is committed to service, empathetic to the many struggles within the city, but also respectful of the spaces that serve those populations? How do I find opportunities that are genuinely helpful, but also respectful of the limitations of a young child?"  As a parent and community member in Baltimore City, it was, and is, important to me that I expose my child to the notion of giving back to the community in a way that is meaningful and authentic.

With that in mind, I, and a team of awesome volunteers at Patterson Park Public Charter School, hosted the first family service "Care Package Creation Day" this past spring.  This event allowed community members, students and families to create over 200 care packages that then got distributed to individuals experiencing homelessness.

This event not only created bags that contained essential items for people in need, but it also served as a developmentally appropriate platform to educate young people about homelessness and the value of giving back to the community, in a safe, family friendly, environment.

Beyond just creating the bags, families were invited to take bags with them when they were finished to keep in their car or on their person, thus providing the opportunity to positively engage and interact with a population that often feels invisible.

As winter approaches, it is all the more important that we not forget our most vulnerable citizens. In conjunction with Patterson Park Public Charter School, I hope to host another care package creation event, with the goal of creating bags that contain essential items for people who are exposed to the elements on a daily basis.

This project is a way to give back to the community, provide necessary resources to the many unhoused individuals in the city during the winter months, and to create a culture of empathy in our youngest citizens, but it cannot happen without the generous financial support of the community.  Please consider donating to help in the purchase of the items that will go into these carefully constructed bags.

All of the proceeds from this campaign will go directly to purchasing items for the event, including: hats, gloves, cereal bars, beef jerky, hand sanitizer, bottled water, trail-mix, first aid supplies, feminine hygiene products, personal hygiene products, and bags.

Your donation will make such an impact--both now and for a future generation of mindful citizens. Patterson Park Public Charter School is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
