Fambul Tok (family talk) is a FREE all-day multicultural celebration of peace forgiveness and community. This process originated in post war-torn Sierra Leone as a way of reconciling conscripted soldiers back into their villages.
Our modified event is happening in the Newton neighbourhood of Surrey B.C.
When: August 20th 10am-4pm
Ages: Teenagers through elders
Speakers:
Candice Hill, first nations cultural coordinator, will open with a blessing, a song and a cleansing smudge.
Abdul Kargbo from Sierra Leone will discuss war and post-war forgiveness and reconcilliation.
After the speakers open, the participants will meet in small groups to engage in Fambul Tok -- talking circles sharing ,honesty, community, forgiveness and reconcilliation. We will have a live music session -raising our collective voices singing Peace songs presented by Music Therapist's for Peace --free song sheets provided--Beautiful Syrian lunch for participants by Tayybeh - A Syrian Womens Refuge Catering Collective based in Vancouver.
The second half of the event is an offer to create art to take home followed a group-wide communal peace art project, all facilitated by volunteer, trained art therapists. All supplies provided.
Volunteering at the event are 15 certified therapists who will be on hand in case any support is needed.
Presented by:
Katheren Szabo and Leah Douglas
Appeal
So far I have been able to raise $1000 from 2 small community grants--500.00 x 2 --another $600 cash from friends and neighbours, The entire event costs are $2300, leaving us short by $700. Having exhausted the local community grants in my area, and having missed some deadlines as I am not a professional grant writer, I have created this gofundme to try and raise the remaining $700. This $700 represents the food budget which will feed 70 participants.
Thank you very much for helping us share our dream of bringing this celebration of fun and healing to my niehgbourhood.
