Hi, I'm Gabby, a fourth year university student and I'm trying to help a Rwandan teenager finish school.
During the summer of 2015, I worked in Kigali, Rwanda for WE-ACTx for Hope, a clinic that provides free medical services and psychosocial support to Rwandans with HIV.
While there, I came to know a girl whom I’ll call “A”, the 15-year-old daughter of a couple that had HIV. “A”s father died in 2008 and her mother died of HIV/AIDS in July, so she is now an orphan with no financial resources. “A” didn’t even have the money to pay for her mother’s burial fees.
Although “A”s mother didn’t have the money to send “A” to school on a regular basis, she enrolled her when she could. “A” loved school and dreamed of finishing all 12 years. But just as I was leaving Rwanda, “A” went to a rural village to live with an aunt, the only relative able to take her in. There are no schools in “A”s new village, so she had to drop out, something she really didn’t want to do.
The doctors and nurses at WE-ACTx For Hope, who have known “A” since she was a little girl, are arranging for her to attend a boarding school in Kigali, not far from the clinic. But sadly, they don’t have the money to pay for “A”s tuition, books, and uniforms until she graduates – which will be in eight years. (Because of her intermittent attendance in primary school, “A” will be starting in the first year of middle school.)
That is why I am fundraising for “A”. I want to create a scholarship fund that will give her the $8,000 she needs to complete school. All the money raised will be transferred to Kigali for “A”s scholarship.
And that is why I’m asking for your help. Anything you can give to help us reach our goal, and send “A” back to school, will be greatly appreciated.
