Ok y'all I need your help. After a long, somber meeting about how we desperately need to make changes to better serve our virtual students, I made a bet with my boss (and also the godfather of my child!) about the incredibly giving, loving, caring community I'm apart of on facebook.. who jumped at the chance to feed the hungry and help as much as they could after the disastrous hurricanes....and I said I was confident we could reach out for help to meet our $ dream goal so our school could finally buy a Zoom Education account. I have till WEDNESDAY to show him that there are beautiful, wonderful people in the world who value education and who live the character of Christ- in service and sharing gifts- even from afar. To meet the BARE MINIMUM NEEDS, we need $750 to create enough Zoom accounts. To meet the dream goal of creating an Education Zoom Account for our school with licensure for 1 year- we need $1,800.
SOME BACKGROUND: Our parents- like a lot of you- have gone through circus hoops to help their kids learn, but most of them not only not speaking English but some even not having more than a 1st grade education. They WANT their kids to succeed, but there are many who also work and struggle and have never used zoom and didn't even know what a google classroom was until this August. They need more than just a schedule and a prayer. They need us to provide the structure and consistency that the world and their country can't provide for them right now. They need us to lead and love and support. The break down any barrier we can to their child's learning in these really hard times.
We are (we think) the only school in the country with the ability to serve our student population both in person and virtual right now. Because our school is AT the children's home- our kids who live on-site have been able to come to in person classes since the beginning of the school year. Our virtual students, however, have not seen the classroom or their teachers in person since the end of February of last year. In that time, in an already devastating (in lives and financially) pandemic, Honduras has suffered 2 horrific hurricanes in an already dire situation of so many living in poverty. Many of our virtual students didn't have more than a parent's cell phone- sometimes not even a smart phone- to try to log into class. Households with multiple children began even without wifi- a cost that many families could not afford. The system here is similar to buying minutes- most families just buy short term, sometimes day-long internet plans that have a certain data usage- NOTHING close to what is needed for 1-3 kids logging into multiple video calls a day. This doesn't even include the frequent power outages, on top of teachers having to end calls and restart because of the zoom time restrictions. Also- having 3rd graders who are just learning English, having to click different links for each class, rather than the school being able to set zoom call schedules to an account where simply logging in has your agenda at the ready. It sounds small, but it would be a huge sigh of relief for many families and so many of our teachers- who are working overtime- to just have this one thing in life get a little easier. So I'm reaching out again for your love, prayers, and HELP to help us move forward in a time that feels like trying to run through molasses.
