Zaire Tuck's School Trip
Spende geschützt
Update: Thanks to everyone who contributed to this campaign. As of 1/16/17, we reached our original $4,000 goal and booked Zaire for the trip.
Unfortunately, we need to raise a bit more money. Here's why: the price of the trip increased from about $3,800 to $4,156; we are paying $195 to get an expedited passport and to offset the fees that Gofundme/WePay take.
Here's the breakdown of where we stand:
Donations as 1/14/17: $4,051
Fees from Gofundme and WePay: $332.47
Payout from gofundme: $3578.53
Offline donations: $140
Total paid out: $3718.53
Cost of trip with insurance: $4,156
Passport: $135 plus $60 if we need expedited processing
Total Expenses: $4,351
Shortfall: $632.47
If we collect another $632, fees will be $50; so new goal should be $4,733
So many of you have helped us, Zaire, his family and his sponsor thank you. If you can help spread the word, we'd greatly appreciate it.
His sponsor, Andrea Weigl, has posted a list below of her in-kind donations to support this effort.
Original post: Zaire Tuck was three-years-old when he first drew a car. His mom recalls: "He just started drawing."
In the 13 years since, Zaire hasn't stopped -- whether it is creating a new Monsters Inc. puzzle for his three younger sisters (after they broke the one they had), a watercolor of bird feathers or a version of the 1948 M.C. Escher classic, "Drawing Hands." Today, Zaire's passion for artwork led him to become a student at Longleaf School of the Arts , an arts-focused charter school in downtown Raleigh. The college preparatory school requires six art classes to graduate and incorporates music, theater, creative writing, drawing, painting and dance into its core curriculm.
Every two years, the school takes a school trip to Europe. This year, the students and teachers are visiting France, Germany and Italy during an 11-day trip in April 2017. For details on the itinerary: http://www.explorica.com/My-Account/My-Tours/TourCenter.aspx
Rachel Davis, the school principal, encouraged Zaire to come on the trip. His French teacher, Jessica Paddock, believes he could benefit greatly from such an experience. As anyone knows who has tried to master a language, Paddock says, it is not just conjugating verbs or memorizing vocabulary and as much as the classroom experience offers, it cannot compare to a trip abroad.
"This trip is an excellent opportunity for Zaire to taste the food, snap pictures of the architecture, walk the cobblestone streets, experience the energy and shake hands with the people," Paddock said "There is no doubt in my mind that this trip will be life-altering for Zaire. That being said, I hope it is not 'once in a lifetime' but instead only the first of many many incredible trips!"
Zaire also sees the trip's possiblities. He has never flown on an plane and his travels so far have been limited to New York or Florida. He wants to see firsthand how people live outside the United States.
"For a long time, I've wanted to see what France is like and know what their architecture, art, culture and food is like," he said.
After such a trip, the future doesn't seem so daunting. Zaire said: "Since this is such a big leap, everything else will be easier."
Note from Zaire Tuck's fundraising partner:
I'm Andrea Weigl, a food writer and cookbook author based in Raleigh. I'm a friend of Zaire's grandmother who teaches at my daughter's preschool. Since I do a lot of fundraising for the school, she asked if I could help Zaire raise money for this trip. The total cost of the trip is more than the family can afford and so I agreed to try to help them make some progress toward the total.
I wrote a cookbook, "Pickles & Preserves: A Savor the South Cookbook ." And so, the rewards you see for donations are mostly related to canning. Zaire and I will get in the kitchen together to make pepper jelly and preserves as thank you gifts. Zaire will be my kitchen assistant at canning classes offered in December and January -- just in time for holiday gift giving and New Year's resolutions if you want 2017 to be the year you learn how to can. Come join us for a fun time.
I will be donating all books, canning supplies, ingredients and shipping costs to support this fundraising effort.
