Grace has been in Canada for four years. She entered by claiming refugee status from Zimbabwe. While waiting for a decision on whether she can remain in Canada, she has gone about to prove her value to this country.
Grace currently works 80-100 hours(!) per week for four Human Service organizations in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island:
- As a team leader in a supportive housing program for previously homeless people
- Staffing at a shelter for victims of domestic violence and their children
- Relief worker in a program that supports people trying to overcome their addictions
- Relief worker in a program that houses youth with disabilities
Grace rarely gets to sleep in her own home!
Grace was told on January 13 that the decision by an agent of the Border Service Agency (CBSA) ordered her to be deported from Edmonton to Zimbabwe on January 30. Under current laws, Grace says she will never be allowed to apply for status again.
She will never be allowed to even visit Canada again.
Grace lives frugally and sends away a generous portion of her earnings to support her village in Zimbabwe. She has already spent her savings ($4000)to hire a lawyer to plead with the CBSA for an extension of her stay. Having lost that appeal, she needs to pay $5000 to hire a lawyer to plead her case in a Federal Court, Grace's last resort.
Grace's co-workers are trying to raise $9000 to help Grace fight her case in a Federal Court. We have worked with Grace and know firsthand how valuable she is to our community and Canada.
We hope that any reasonable Judge will recognize her contribution to Canada and allow her to stay.
Can you consider making a contribution for Grace's sake ....and Canada's?
Any money raised above the $9000 will be sent to Grace's village in Zimbabwe.
