September 30, 2015 will be the the 3rd Annual Orange Shirt Day and we are looking to raise funds for a website. The website would allow us to share information about Orange Shirt Day, and communities across Canada and even beyond could register their events. We need your help to raise the funds to make this happen!
Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) Residential School (1891-1981) commemoration event held in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in the spring of 2013. It grew out of Phyllis’s account of having her shiny new orange shirt, bought by her grandmother, taken away from her as a six-year old girl on her first day of school at the Mission.
September 30th was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools; it give teachers time to plan an event and it sets the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year.
Orange Shirt Day opens the door to global conversation on all aspects of Residential Schools. It is an opportunity to create meaningful discussion about the effects of Residential Schools and the legacy they have left behind: a discussion all Canadians can tune into and create bridges with each other for reconciliation.
Resolutions have been passed in support of Orange Shirt Day by local governments, school districts, and First Nations in the Cariboo and beyond. Most recently the Assembly of First Nations Chiefs-in-Council passed a resolution declaring Orange Shirt Day “a first step in reconciliation”, and pledging to bring the message home as well as to the government of Canada and the churches responsible.
