Life After Manus: Help Wahid Build a New Life

Donation protected
In May 2020 Wahid arrived in Philadelphia after more than six years stranded in PNG by the Australian Government.

He arrived just as COVID-19 was surging in America, disproportionately infecting black, brown and immigrant communities and ravaging the economy.  Refugee resettlement agencies were overwhelmed and unable to provide support, and he still suffers ongoing health issues from violent attacks he experienced in detention.

Wahid asked the Ads-Up Refugee Network to make this fundraiser for the training costs of a commercial truck-driving licence, which has been a ticket to secure employment and financial independence for dozens of Manus and Nauru refugees in the USA.

When terrorist bombings and Taliban threats became unbearable in Pakistan, Wahid fled, eventually seeking safety in Australia.  Instead of freedom, Wahid was sent to in offshore detention on Manus Island.

Despite qualifying as a legitimate refugee, Wahid was held in detention for six years before finally being resettled in the United States.

Despite the difficulties, Wahid tells us, “You don’t know how happy we are to be here!”

Many of his friends are driving trucks, and Wahid wants to join them.  He sees truck driving as a path to self-sufficiency and independence.  One day he would like to start his own business, but for now driving will help him to get his feet firmly on the ground.

Wahid has investigated the opportunity, done his homework and is ready to start his CDL truck driving licence training.  Now all he needs is your help to fund the state licence training and exams.

Funds donated will be held in Ads-Up's Charity Account and used to directly pay for training costs.  If this page raises more than is required to fund Wahid’s training, excess funds will be reallocated to help another refugee cover training costs.
