Nepal Community Toilet Project

Donation protected
In 2013, I spent three weeks in the small community of Gawai outside of the National Park in Chitwan, Nepal. During my stay I spent time volunteering at a local school and exploring the communities nearby. I had the opportunity to encounter some of the most friendly and kind individuals who welcomed a complete stranger into their homes; all the while eager and proud to share their culture.

When I left, I promised Ranjan and his family that I would do my best to raise some money to send back to help the community of Gawai to construct a washroom facility for those families who have never known proper sanitation, over one hundred individuals in total.

Although it has been over two years since my stay, I make a daily effort to consider all that I am so fortunate to have and to be able to do. And while admittedly enjoying the comforts and conveniences of the first world, I am reminded that we should all be making a daily effort to help those who are less fortunate.

And it is difficult to fathom those in other parts of the world who live their lives with so little, even lacking what we would consider to be the most basic of human needs, but still maintaining the most positive of outlooks on life.

I was re-reading my blog to reflect a bit on my reasons for continuing this fundraiser for another year and thought this summed it up well:

"Despite our cultural differences and communication difficulties, the overall kindness and generosity I have been shown by complete strangers along this journey as has compelled me to follow through on my promise to do my very best to give something back to the community of Gawai and to return someday in the future to visit the adoptive family that became my own for the last two weeks."

My goal is to raise another $1400 (CAD) to send to Ranjan so that another toilet facility can be built in the community of Gawai. After hosting a party in December, friends and family have so far donated $420 toward the cause; so another $980 still needs to be raised.

Donations of any denomination are appreciated and the impact that even a few dollars can have on an entire community is very great.

Below is a link to a video that includes some interviews with residents from this small community. Hopefully it will provide some indication of the need within this community and the kind spirit of those who will benefit from your donation.
