Our little cat Mona has been diagnosed with a very rare blood condition, Polycythemia Vera.
Essentially, this condition causes her red cell count to be extremely high, which makes her blood very thick. The current levels and thickness of her blood can have other adverse effects because it’s so difficult for her blood to flow through her body.
Luckily, this condition is treatable, but the treatment sessions are very costly.
Once a week, we have to take her to the vet where she is sedated, and they draw a portion of her blood volume and replace it with fluids to help dilute her blood, and she is also on medication that she will likely have to take for the rest of her life.
We have already done 2 of these sessions paying out of pocket, and the vet anticipates that she will need 5-7 additional sessions to return her red cell count to a safe and normal range. We want to make sure she gets the best treatment she can, but the costs of this are adding up very quickly.
Each session is $400, including sedation, the blood draw, and testing the levels to see if they have changed since the previous week. Her medication, which helps slow the production of the red blood cells, is $150 for a ten-week supply.
We know that this pandemic has been financially compromising for many, and we struggled with the idea of asking for financial assistance when so many folks are having trouble paying their rent right now. Ultimately, we did decide to create this fund, because we don’t want to end up in a situation where our savings are completely depleted by these vet bills.
