I am pleased to announce that 4 students from PS 176, The Cambria Heights School, have recently won the NY State Future Problem Solvers Competition. This program is part of our thriving STEM program at PS 176.
The Future Problem Solving Program was founded in 1974 by creativity pioneer, Dr. E. Paul Torrance. Future Problem Solving Program International (FPSPI) stimulates critical and creative thinking skills, encourages students to develop a vision for the future, and prepares students for leadership roles. FPSPI engages students in creative problem solving within the curriculum and provides competitive opportunities. Future Problem Solving Program International involves thousands of students annually from Australia, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Portugal, Singapore, Turkey, United Kingdom, and the United States.
Our students participated in the Global Issues Problem Solving portion of the competition. Global Issues Problem Solving (GIPS) is a competitive component of FPSPI which can be accomplished as a team (of 4) or individual activity in which participants research a series of global topics and learn a six-step creative problem-solving process. Problem solvers apply their topic and creative problem solving knowledge to address a charge presented in an imagined situation, termed Future Scene.
Trained evaluators score student work and return it with feedback including suggestions for improvement. The top scoring teams and individuals on the qualifying problem are invited to Affiliate FPS Competitions. The winners of each respective Affiliate FPS Competition advance to the FPSP International Conference in June.
PS 176 had 4 teams compete in the NY State Bowl on Sunday, March 20th 2016. At the State Bowl, the groups competed against 27 teams from across New York State. In the Skit competition, we had 1 team
come in 2nd place in NY State. In the Global Issues Problem Solving Competition, we had a team come in 2nd place and another team come in 1st place in NY State. The 1st place team, “The Next Generation,” has been invited to participate in the International Conference in June at Michigan State University and compete against teams from all 50 states and 14 countries from around the world. This is a big win for PS 176, as well as District 29 of the NYC school system. We are proud to be representing our city and state in this International Competition.
There is a large cost associated with sending the students to Michigan to compete in the 5-day event competition. The cost is roughly $1,000 per person, which includes airfare, room and board, and registration fees. We are hoping to be able to send the 4 students, their coach, Mark Coccarelli, and one parent chaperone for each child.
We are aiming to raise $10,000 by May 1st in order to fully fund their trip and allow them to participate in this once in a lifetime opportunity.
