"No Plastic" Workshops for Indonesian Children

Donation protected
Indonesia has a major plastic waste problem on its hands. Indonesia is second only to China as the world’s largest contributor to plastic pollution. Between 1.15 million and 2.41 million tons of plastic waste contaminating the oceans each year. Of this, Indonesia is estimated to contribute roughly 200,000 tons of waste from its rivers and streams.

The MUDFISH No-Plastic Project travels to the islands of Indonesia to poor villages and areas afflicted by natural disasters to run fun workshops for children that use art and music to educate the children about the danger of single-use plastic and the proper disposal and recycling of plastic.

Activities include coloring and drawing nature’s wonderful creatures, singing songs, and creating stop-motion animations about keeping our environment clean. Water filter tanks are provided to the village and the children are given reusable water bottles decorated with art created by children with a simple message “No Plastic” “Earth is Fantastic

In order to involve the entire village in properly disposing of litter and recycling the MUDFISH No-Plastic Project also provides a large container for disposing of plastic trash. An arrangement is made so that when the container is full the plastic waste is transported to a recycling center. The result is a cleaner environment as well as providing a modest income for the village.

Our goal is to make the children aware of the problem and through them change the mentality of the whole village in regard to the use of plastic and the disposal of plastic garbage.

What will we do with your contribution? This is our second year successfully running the project and we now want to register as a non-profit organization so that generous donors like you can get a tax deduction. That will cost us Rp.25.000.000 (about 1,600 euros or $1,550 US).

The rest (100%) of the money we raise goes directly to materials used in  workshops, providing children with recyclable bottles, and providing villages with water filtration tanks and recycling containers. If we meet our goal we will be able to fully operate for the next two years and prove to our supporters, future sponsors and the government  of the value of the project. We are working hard to achieve that.

A workshop for 50 children (which requires a team of five arts/educators, and includes providing 50 recyclable bottles, a water filtration system, and a plastic trash disposal container cost approximately 7,500,000 rupiah (about 480 euros or $525 US). If we reach our goal it means that in the next two years with your help we will have helped 2,800 children, and provided 60 villages with water filtration systems and trash recycling containers.

Your support is crucial to helping us tackle plastic pollution in Indonesia at the source. Using education to build a basic infrastructure to shift from a polluting disposable plastic economy to a reusable circular model that will result in a healthier planet.
