Buying knitted items from local charity - Friends of the Baby Unit in Derby - to give to the children of Ukrainian. These will be sent directly to my brother who is currently helping on the border.

Hi all - my name is Annie. Wife to Dean and Mummy to Vivien.

 

Seeing the news from the east of Europe is heartbreaking and I can't stop thinking about the poor people of Ukraine. I have donated money but looking at Vivi I wanted to do more for those children who now have nothing - no home, no possessions and for some - no parents.

 

So I have decided to start this page to raise money to buy the children of Ukraine knitted items from the Friends of the Baby Unit in Derby.

 

This means I can help 2 good causes at once - and so can you!

 

THE BACKGROUND

 

Ever since Vivi was born 17months ago I turned into Mama Bear. The love I felt for my little family was unexplainable. Becoming a mother made me think entirely differently. 

 

I found out about the Friends of the Baby Unit (FOBU) from my local market. I met Kate and some of her wonderful volunteers at their stall selling knitted items made for children and babies. All their proceeds go to the Baby Unit and I have supported them whenever I can ever since.

 

MY CONTACT

 

Some of you already know that my brother Charlie Hammerton runs a company providing bushcraft and outdoor activity sessions to help with the therapy of children who have gone through trauma.

 

He is making his way to the Poland-Ukrainian border with a carload of aid and will be setting up a children's respite and support network for the refugees of Ukraine. He will be working with local charities in Poland and will provide children with a safe space. This will give their parents/carers an opportunity to gather what they need and organise their onward journey, knowing their kids are safely being cared for while they do it.

 

THE PLAN

 

I will bulk purchase knitted items such as jumpers, hats and blankets from FOBU and then send them directly to Charlie at the support center. This way I know that the money will be helping FOBU and these much-needed knitted items will get to the child refugees quickly and directly.

 

A kind of pay it forward idea!

 

It is currently -9 degrees on the border and some of these children have left their homes with nothing.

It is also not just now that these people need our help. Children grow and will need these items for months to come. The refugees from the east of the country are still making their way to the border and they too will need help on arrival.

 

THE FUNDS

 

Please give what you can as every last penny helps. It may not be a massive fundraising push but I know that if we can help both FOBU to help babies and parents in Derby and just some of those children in Ukraine, the lives of these children and their parents in both countries maybe just a little brighter - even for just a moment... and that to me is a good thing.
