What is Wings Against Hate?
Created by the Asian American Dispute Resolution Center (APADRC) in collaboration with A Window Between Worlds (AWBW) and LA vs HATE, Wings Against Hate is a social initiative that uses art to activate community connection. This program fosters commitment to authenticity through open dialogue, empowering individuals and communities, and building bridges against bigotry.
The Wings Against Hate network expands through both in-person events and online engagement, with the goal of anchoring a sense of belonging and sustained action. Each individual who participates spreads the principles of support, safety, and belonging further across their social groups.
Why should I support Wings Against Hate?
When you participate in Wings Against Hate, you create something for yourself rather than relying on the aid of external organizations or authorities. Wings Against Hate empowers individuals to take ownership of their lived experiences by building a personalized support network.
We recognize that trauma is not exclusive to direct experiences with hate-based actions. When you hear about a hate crime on the news, read about it in the paper, or watch it unfold before your eyes on the daily news, you are exposed to indirect hate.
Guess what? It's not unusual to experience vicarious trauma this way.
Wings Against Hate’s mission is to EMPOWER individuals to take action, STRENGTHEN their communities, and spread messages of LOVE and SUPPORT in response to hate incidents.
How can I participate?
A person's Wings Against Hate participation typically begins before they need support. You establish your support group while in a positive headspace so that when challenges arise, you have your list of reliable folks to reach out to for help.
By investing time and effort into BUILDING YOUR SUPPORT SYSTEM beforehand, you create a foundation that buoys your well-being during difficult moments.
This program incorporates the use of touchstones — small stones with meaningful words or symbols — as a tangible source of support. We can carry these touchstones as a reminder of strength and community; they are symbols that provide comfort in moments of vulnerability.
The Wings Against Hate logo is made up of touchstones created by community members, emphasizing the collective and ongoing nature of this durational art initiative. This further highlights how art is “glue” — it keeps us connected to our purpose, to each other, and to the role each of us plays over time against acts of hate.
By inviting every individual to ask the question:“I don’t know how or when I’ll need you, but will you be there when I do?” Wings Against Hate pushes us to make OUR JOURNEY against hate PERSONAL. More importantly, this question helps us see the responsibility of the ways we choose to respond to hate as a conscious decision.
