Wilson Colombia Birth Family Trip

On August 2nd, 2000 our lives changed forever when we traveled to Bogota, Colombia to welcome our son Louis Sebastian into our lives. We never imagined, 18 years later, that we would find Louis' birth family and that they would have the same longing to meet him as we have to meet them. We have spent the last 4 months communicating with this family, which includes siblings, cousins, aunts and uncles, an 80 year old abuelita and dozens of extended family members all living in the El Salvador barrio of Medellin, Colombia.
We (Louis, sibling Rachel, parents Jenny and Ty and Señor Steeber/Spanish Interpreter/ Grandpa) hope to make our first return to Colombia on August 2nd, 2018. This day will be the 18 year anniversary of that initial journey. Our first stop will be Bogota, where we spent 5 weeks completing Louis' adoption in the late summer of 2000. We will visit FANA (Fundación para la Asistencia de la Niñez Abandonada) the orphanage where Louis spent the first months of his life. We then plan to fly to Medellin, an area that we couldn't visit during Louis' adoption due to the dangerous environment at that time in Colombia's history.
Our hope is to raise $8,000 for our 10 day journey. Funds will be used to pay for travel expenses: flights from Minneapolis to Bogota (and the return) and between Bogota and Medellin as well as living expenses during our stay. While in Medellin, we hope to take day trips in and around the area of Antioquia while visiting Louis' birth family just outside of the city center as much as possible.

Most adoptive families who adopt internationally never have the opportunity to find their child's birth family. We feel so fortunate not only to have found them, but to be so warmly received by them. We are eager to share this unfolding story with all of you.
