Who pays for Hector Bremner ads?

Help Hector Bremner identify the "mystery people" behind the ads that feature high-resolution photos of his mug appearing all over town.

We are crowdfunding to pay a bounty for information that leads to journalists being able to confirm the identities of the group behind this "grand mystery" of who is putting ads of Hector Bremner up all over Vancouver and on Facebook.

Hector Bremner, YES Vancouver, and key figures such as Tim Crowhurst and Mark Marissen behind his campaign claim they have no idea who is behind a shadowy and well-heeled group called "Vancouverites for Affordable Housing" and these mysterious billboards, glossy posters featuring larger-than-life photos of Hector as the only choice for Vancouver's mayor. According to an article in the Globe & Mail, "some experienced political watchers estimate the amount dropped by the mystery group on outdoor billboards, train station ads and targeted social media advertising for Mr. Bremner at upward of $75,000."

"Vancouverites for Affordable Housing" also hosted a Facebook page running attack ads against NPA candidate Ken Sim and independent candidate Kennedy Stewart while simultaneously running ads in support of Hector Bremner. On the page, no website was listed, no contact info and no administrators of the page were listed.

New rules surrounding Facebook political advertising were created in 2017 after their 2016 election where a lack of transparency around election ads played a role in getting Donald Trump elected. However, these new rules only apply to the United States and do not apply to us here in Canada and the Wild, Wild West of politics here in British Columbia.

Furthermore, Elections B.C. indicates it does not have any requirements for 3rd party advertisers unless it's within the campaign period

"Elections B.C. spokesperson Andrew Watson indicated that individuals and groups can now register so they can conduct advertising during the campaign period. However, Watson explained that they are not required to register outside the campaign period.

'Third-party advertising is only regulated during the campaign period,' Watson said by phone."

So let's solve this mystery together, shall we, Mr. Bremner? If Elections B.C. and Facebook can't help us, then we'll have to look for simple answers together.

With this gofundme campaign, we will provide the full amount of whatever amount gets donated to any person who can provide us with details on who is paying for these ads and who  this group "Vancouverites for Affordable Housing" truly is. I'll put forth the first $100.

We need to move past partisan politics to deliver answers. We need to work together to make this happen. Hey, because it's us, here, now, that's going to get the job done. It's time to say YES to finding out who is paying for these campaign ads.

YES to transparency.
YES to big money out of politics.
YES to the truth.

P.S. If this cash bounty doesn't identify who is behind these ads before the end of the election, I will donate all proceeds to a charity that builds affordable social housing. Last I checked, you were still looking for a place to donate your city councillor's salary:
