Hi there! My name is Chrissy Whitford and I am creating this Go Fund Me page on behalf of my parents.
Like many Houstonians, my childhood home in West Houston sustained damage due to Hurricane Harvey. West Houston is not prone to flooding, but due to the release of both the Addicks and Barkers Reservoirs, water came pouring in. My parents have lived in this home for over 30 years and have never even seen rain collect up to the curb. Even when we've seen Houston affected by other hurricanes such as Ike, Allison, and Rita, West Houston has always survived these storms unscathed. That being said, like many other West Houstonians, my family does not have flood insurance.
The reservoir water got as high as 4 feet and my father and our family cat ended up having to be rescued by boat. While my father did his best to store a few first floor items upstairs, not everything could be saved. Not only will the first floor need to be completely remodeled, but we will need to look into replacing much needed household appliances.
The good news is that we’ve already received unbelievable support from our community of friends and even complete strangers. Mormon Helping Hands generously offered their back-breaking labor to pull flooring, strip carpet, sheetrock, and cabinets. All that's left of the first floor are the beams that hold the structure of the house.
We are at a loss as to what to do next, especially financially. While we are more than willing to put in our own labor, there are skills and services that are beyond our expertise. That being said, if you're in any position to help us rebuild our family home, please know we would be eternally grateful. If you’re not in a position to help us in this way, please know we are open to recommendations concerning what direction to take, what contractors to consider, and how to best keep moving forward.
