We've been in the process of trying to raise $15,000 to help us better serve women who have experienced sexual exploitation and/or human trafficking across Michigan. This original goal would allow us to:
1. Provide ongoing holistic services to women who may need them.
2. Meet with women in the sex industry in a less-threatening, supportive way.
3. Create 24-hour emergency housing in a pinch that is safe and supportive.
4. Provide immediate transportation to and from services.
5. Begin street outreach to women who may be in danger.
6. Create a social enterprise opportunity through Freedom Paddle Company to begin hiring women seeking to leave the sex industry in meaningful work, while they reach big goals for their lives.
7. Become preventative in our approach, increasing our programming to vulnerable teens, particularly those involved in our foster care system.
Though we will not reach our original goal by our date, and our timeline has been pushed back because of the impact of Coronavirus on our ability to conduct safe outreach to women of our community, we have no intention of giving up on this project.
Some changes:
1. We will not be able to conduct our regular, weekly outreach into strip clubs and illicit massage parlors until at LEAST March 31, 2020, as many of these locations have been closed due to COVID-19.
2. We will not begin our 2020 Paddle Board season as early as we had hoped. We are hoping for Memorial Day Weekend, but this may change as things progress within this pandemic.
3. We will not be able to purchase a van for our mobile drop-in center until after the COVID-19 crisis has lessened. Many dealerships are not considered "essential" at this time, except for their repair and service departments. We will wait this out and trust that the right van will come in time.
