Six generations of my family has enjoyed our cottage next to Cameron Falls since 1927. It was built by my grandfather's aunt, Lu Nielson, then passed to my grandmother, Amelia Johansen, and now is enjoyed by my uncle, Frank Johansen, my mother Joyce Johansen Linebarger, and our families.
I presently live in California. I am in contact with Brenda Kurtz of the Waterton Lakes Leaseholders Association, Mariajose Martinez of the Waterton Park Community Association, and Shameer Suleman of the Waterton Chamber of Commerce, who will be doing the on-the ground planning of the event.
For all those who love Waterton, no gratitude is enough for the bravery and hard work of the fire crews who battled heat, smoke, flames, and wind to save the Waterton Townsite on September 11-12, 2017.
In honor of these courageous men and women from near and far, we plan to host a "Firefighter Celebration Day" in Waterton for the heroes and their families in summer 2018. We also plan to erect a permanent monument honoring their service. We are including the WLLA, Waterton Community Association, and Parks Canada in all the planning.
If you have been lucky enough to experience the beauty of Waterton, please consider showing your gratitude by donating to make this recognition possible.
Details about the event will be provided along the way as plans are made. If you want to be part of the planning team, or can contribute in other ways with services or connections, please email me at the link given.
THANK YOU FOR SAVING OUR TOWN!
The WLLA WPCA and Waterton Chamber of Commerce are actively involved together to set up an event. So far, the date of August 25, 2018 looks like the best option for the Firefighter Recognition Date, so mark it on your calendars!
