Help fund assistive hygiene app

Donation protected
We are a team of engineering students from Stanford University who are creating an app called 'Washable' to help individuals with cognitive disabilities gain more independence in daily hygiene tasks.   Our current app provides visual and audio aids to guide its users through the process of handwashing.  In later versions, we hope to add tasks like showering and toothbrushing as well as increase the app's customizability.

We are launching our initial app on June 1 and greatly appreciate your support in helping us get it out into the world!

We are proud to announce that our project is a semifinalist in the 2017 Student Design Competition held by RESNA, an organization dedicated to promoting and increasing access to assistive technology.  We have been invited to showcase our project at RESNA's Annual Conference in June.

Our Mission

All teenagers desire independence as they approach adulthood, but this goal can be particularly challenging to young adults with cognitive disabilities. We want to address this gap by facilitating autonomy in one of the most fundamental and intimate areas: personal hygiene.  With our app, we hope to create a simple and accessible tool for these individuals to complete these tasks more independently.

Our Story

We are a team of three engineering students from Stanford University working to address this problem. We interviewed over 50 individuals with autism, parents, therapists, medical professionals, and educators about their experiences and challenges with personal hygiene tasks.  During these discussions, we noticed the widespread use of visual schedules in bathrooms, but often heard from caretakers that the visuals alone were not enough to hold their child's or patient's attention.  We realized there was a need for more engagement and/or stimulation in order to enable these individuals to complete these daily hygiene tasks more independently.

For the last 20 weeks, we have been designing and testing different ways to address this need.  We have explored both physical and digital products, which we have tested and discussed with our target group.

As our final product, we have designed an app that allows users to create personalized visual and audio aids for individuals who need assistance completing daily hygiene tasks on their own.   The current version of our app is a "proof of concept" - a simpler version of our design that we will use to test our concept with users for the task of handwashing.  We hope to continue building on this beta version of our app to include other hygiene tasks like toothbrushing and showering.

We are working with developers to release it to the world, and we need your help to raise the necessary funds.  The app is already in development, and we will be releasing it on June 1.  We look forward to getting feedback from the community about our app so we can continue to improve and build on it going forward.

Please share this campaign with anyone who may be interested in our project!  We appreciate the amazing support we have received from this wonderful community and we want our project to reach as many people as possible.
