Water, Sanitation and Handwashing; WASH for Primary Schools, Homabay, Kenya
This Oakland Rotary Endowment, Rotary Club Kisumu Winam, and Rotary Foundation project will drill borehole wells at Rawinji and St Charles Kauko Primary Schools to serve both children and the communities, and improve sanitation in the two schools by providing new toilets and hand wash areas.
The communities requested help from RC Kiumu Winam to replace their surface wells with borehole wells drilled within the school grounds. The schools also need more and safer toilets. Students and the community will be trained in sanitation. There are currently only four pit toilets for 690 girls and 750 boys.
Students must collect water daily, which interferes with their studies, and there are no handwashing stations.
In addition to the 1,500 students, two, solar-powered, ATM-type water dispensing points will be included to supply the surrounding communities. The money necessary to sustain the system will be paid via residents' secure, mobile phone banking accounts which are universal in Kenya. Community members will be trained to maintain the project. The wells and their finances will be managed by a committee composed of school administrators and elected community members.
The total cost of the Project is $120,000. Rotary Club of Oakland has committed $45,000. Rotary Club of Kisumu has committed $2,500 to preparatory expenses such as a hydrological survey. The remaining $75,000 must be raised from community members and their friends and families, other Rotary Clubs, Rotary Districts, individuals, and organizations. This gofundme benefits the Oakland Rotary Endowment a 501(c)(3), the charitable arm of Rotary Club of Oakland, which is the primary funder of this project.
