Walking with Grace: a witnessing walk to end child detention and family separation

Together we're stepping towards a vision of belonging and liberation for those "yearning to breathe free." Those yearning to breathe free is us, the people we meet in communities along the way, and those being detained. These practices and policies could not be happening outside of us, if they weren't already happening inside of us. And so we walk to witness what is happening to people in detention centers and to their families and communities.  We walk to practice our humanity and to encourage communities that can hold space for humane immigration policies.

With the support and welcoming of many, I am walking to detention centers throughout the United States. The trip begins in the geological womb of Widow Jane Mine in Rosendale, New York. As Valarie Kaur, civil rights activist, spoke in her visionary address to the country:

“Yes, the future is dark. I close my eyes and I see the darkness of my grandfather’s jail cell. And the mother in me asks, what if? What if this darkness is not the darkness of the tomb, but the darkness of the womb?...What does the wisdom of the midwife tell us: breathe and push!”

From New York the push continues on foot to visit different prisons serving as ICE detention centers to bear witness, be in community, and continue to bridge the gap from inside and out. Along the way we will meet with communities to share stories from people being detained, to practice and remember that what happens at the border, inside the prisons, and in camps happens inside each one of us. We are practicing and remembering, together, a trust that there is enough and that everyone belongs.

Monday, September 30th the journey launches with a Foundation Walk to the Strafford County House of Correction in Dover, NH. This facility functions, in part, as an immigrant detention center. This 79-mile journey will take place over the course of three weeks, concluding on October 23rd. There will be two more Foundation Walks held over the winter - one to the Franklin, MA County House of Correction and one to the Boston, MA Suffolk County House of Correction. I invite fellow walkers to join me for any or all (or any segment) of these trips.

“Live your truth. Express your love. Share your enthusiasm. Take action toward your dreams. Walk your talk. Dance and sing to your music. Embrace your blessings. Make today worth remembering.”

-Steve Maraboli

We walk to envision a world where all life is unconditionally cared for and thriving.

This walk is moved and influenced by many of our teachers and leaders who’ve walked as a practice of liberation before us. A few of these teachers are: Sojourner Truth, Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, Thich Nhat Hanh, Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche, Peace Pilgrim, Dorris “Granny D” Haddock, Rev. angel Kyodo Williams, adrienne maree brown, Casey Gerald, Leah Penniman, Resmaa Menakem, ALisa Starkweather, Woman Stands Shining Pat Mccabe, Soryu Forall, Calvin Aldrich and many other family members, friends and teachers that shape our lives.

In preparation we’ll be hosting fundraisers and walks prior to our departure. Please follow us on Instagram, FB and online at www.walkingwithgrace.net. We’ll post updates along the walk and ways you can get involved in organizing your local community to host and welcome.

The money being raised here will support the walk and Freedom for Immigrants.
