My wife, Khaliah Abdul-Karim, was a dedicated and charitable believer. She lived her life as a chaplain in hospitals and in crisis management throughout America. She was a first responder chaplain at Sandy Hook in Newtown, Connecticut. It was there that she worked with and counseled parents and police officers after the tragic shooting event of twenty six small children, teachers and administrators. She went on to support individuals who lost their loved ones due to such disasters as tornadoes and hurricanes. As a Connecticut resident, she established Muslim Sisters United and Sisters in Plight. These two organizations helped women in shelters, women suffering domestic violence and women released from incarceration. She was on the board of directors for the Larabie Foundation which offered financial support to all people in need.
Khaliah did all of this while struggling with kidney disease. It lead to dialysis, gastrointestinal disease, diabetes, two amputations and constant pain. During all this she never stopped serving, smiling, and even doing large cooking events, alone, until the day she passed. Her heart stopped while she was in my arms…she was just tired. She believed the miracle of prayer is what had sustained her.
It is our belief that charity done on behalf of a deceased person will benefit them after death. This is the reason we are building a water well in Khaliah's name in Lassa Hills, Togo, Africa. It is being constructed by BAWA Salis Enterprises and Water. It is our prayer that each time the well is used for wudu, drinking, washing, etc., she will gain benefit in the hereafter. Therefore we ask that you give generously as she did. The benefit will be for the deserving people of Africa and for my beloved wife, Khalilah.
