My Story...  Being a migraine sufferer, it wasn't uncommon for me to have frequent headaches. So, when I went to the emergency room several times, and was told I was having migraine episodes, it wasn't a surprise. I took my meds as directed, and continued with my daily routines. It wasn't until the headaches progressed, and my vision began to change that I became concerned. After many appointments with my PCP, 2 Ophthalmologists, a Neurosurgeon, and numerous exams (CT- scans, MRIs, PET SCANS, etc.) it was later determined a Meningioma (tumor) was compressed against my optical nerve behind my left eye, and brain. Due to the type of tumor and its location, my Neurosurgeon felt it was best for me to see a specialist. Therefore, he referred me to one at NYU Medical Center. The specialist at NYU determined I'd need to have a craniotomy to remove the tumor. However, there was one road block... the insurance company! The fact he is out of their "network" they were unwilling to approve the surgery. After 5 months of fighting with the insurance company, and cutting through their red tape the surgery is finally approved and scheduled. The upside to having this surgery is it will relieve pressure from my brain. The downside is I won’t regain vision in my left eye. As many of you can imagine this is a scary and overwhelming time for me. In addition to being nervous about the outcome of the surgery, I am also overextending myself financially. I am trying some things that are very difficult for me: telling my personal business and asking for help. Anything you donate will go towards medical bills, travel expenses, and personal care.
