Homeless to employed in 24 hours?

I met Dan on Tuesday, outside Chipotle. He was pandhandling, and I asked him if he wanted to get dinner.* This is what I learned.

Recently, Dan's wife died from an accidental medication overdose. He'd recently lost his job, and was evicted after he spent $1,300 to have her creamated (and sent the ashes back to her family in Poland). His four year old son is staying with his 18 year old stepdaughter and her boyfriend in a one bedroom apartment.

After dinner, I got Dan some gift cards and a cell phone charger (he's on one of those prepaid plans) so we could keep in touch. Within 24 hours, I was able to schedule a job interview for him (which I'm taking him to today). 

Dan hasn't asked me for a thing. And for every kind deed I've done for him, he's offered to pay me back. I just told him to bring his kid up to the beach when he's back on his feet, and we'd hang out.

Assuming Dan gets the job today, he's still got needs that need to be met in the short term, including: 

Rent: $75/week + $120 deposit (on a rented room).

Bike: $100 (just a guess) to ride to work.

Food: $200. 

A little over seven hundred bucks, and this guy will be back on his feet, working instead of panhandling, with a roof over his head.

Oh, and if you're wondering, there are no shelters open in the summer in the Chicago area, so he can't just go to one of those. I also tried getting in touch with the La Grange Police (kinda helpful) and two social services angencies (quite unhelpful).

Let's put this guy back on his feet. 

*I don't reccomend everyone does this. I'm in a unique situation to be able to pick up hitchhikers when I feel like God is nudging me, and to do stuff like this. Do not try this at home...you're not as imposing as I am. Plus, I trust my soul to the Lord Jesus and my life to Gaston Glock's flawless engineering.
