Background

For most, the news of a pregnancy is a joyous affair. Maybe it’s the longed for fulfilment of a dream, a moment of excitement and expectation. Friends and family gather around to share in your elation. They offer to throw you a baby shower, perhaps organise a meal rota once the little one has arrived, to come around to hold the baby so that you can finally have a hot cup of coffee  and a quick well-deserved nap. Perhaps you might even find yourself a little overwhelmed with visitors and offers of help?
Introducing 20 year old, pregnant Sammy. Sammy has had 3 previous miscarriages and as a result suffers bouts of depression and low moods. Sammy is unsure who the father of her unborn child is and is at risk of losing her room at the hostel where she lives, due to the constant string of men attending her accommodation for sex. She was subject to child sexual exploitation from a very young age and was moved out of Birmingham for her own protection but has recently chosen to return. After her mother kicked her out of the family home at the age of 15, Sammy no longer has a relationship with her or any other family members.
Can you imagine if this was you?

Our story
Amelia is a Movement Psychotherapist and soon to be Doula. Hope is a level 2& 3 Personal Trainer/Fitness Instructor and now Doula. There are many, many more women in a similar position to Sammy all across Birmingham. In fact, in 2012 an NHS report found that two thirds of the mothers  in Birmingham live in social depravation. So, we are combining our skills to assist perinatal women who are isolated and vulnerable by setting up Elayos, a health and well-being charity. We chose the name as spelling variation of the Greek word for compassion.
(we are currently waiting for the Charity Commission to officially say that we can have the name Elayos and to confirm that our charitable objects are for the public benefit)
Please visit www.elayos.co.uk   for more detailed information of how we work & what we do.

You can help us!
To be able to apply for funding we must be able to show that what we do is beneficial.
Amelia & Hope will be starting work, full time in January 2019 & are already in touch with several pregnant women who are in desperate need of our services. However we can’t do the work without funds.

This is where we need YOU...
We need money for:
- 3 months wages for Amelia and Hope whilst we work with clients and collect case study results to present to potential funders
- Amelia to gain her Doula qualification ASAP
- Essential goods for clients
- Admin resources
- Travel costs
- Pay for a photographer & web designer
- Advertising costs for referrals
- Training (such as lone worker & safeguarding)
