The Victorian Roller Derby League (VRDL) All Stars from Melbourne are the creme-de-la-creme of the VRDL skater roster. Consisting of the top 20 skaters that the Victorian Roller Derby League has to offer, the All Stars are currently the top team in Australasia and ranked 4th in the WFTDA world rankings.
I don’t know if you’ve heard, but the VRDL All Stars made it to the 2014 WFTDA Championships! CHAAAAAMPS! This is the first time an Australian team will be competing at this level.
We've been up to a bit in the past few weeks. After a quick stop off and a warm up game with the Dallas Derby Devils, we landed in Charleston, West Virginia for the WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs on October 3-5. We took out the Mad Rollin' Dolls AND Philly, then were schooled by the mighty Rose to finish second seed with a ticket to Champs and a medal that we’re all pretty tootin chuffed with. This means we get to go back to America! The top 12 teams in Nashville, Tennessee from October 31 to November 2. Yep, Halloween weekend, also the Melbourne Cup long weekend. This is a considerably tight turn around, but we’ve learned bucket loads from Playoffs and training is ON to accelerate into Champs.
Off the track and in our mostly not smelly normal lives, the reality is that this is a huge financial undertaking for the team. We’ve tested the flexibility of employment to various success, compromised and sacrificed, and coached our pants off around Australia to put towards these costs. The flights alone for Champs are $26,000, we’ve dug deep and now we want to make sure we land on our feet after what’s sure to be a derby experience of a lifetime. If you want to keep seeing us pushing those boundaries and competing with the best, then please pledge your support.
