Atlantic Salmon Population Recovery

Donation protected
The friends of the Kouchibouguacis is a watershed group operating in northern Kent County, New Brunswick.

Our organization was founded in early 2000’s to heal the river and rebuild the salmon population back to natural levels.  We’ve tried a variety of stocking methods over the years but nothing seemed to work until we started tinkering with Jordan-Scotty incubators in 2012.  These incubation boxes are installed in the river in the fall and protect the eggs through winter until their spring hatch, dispersing young salmon into their natural habitat.

Four years later in 2016, we had a five-fold increase of adult salmon returning to spawn during their fall run. Population monitoring exercises have also shown a modest but sustained population increase ever since then… In nature, roughly 10% of salmon eggs hatch successfully.  These incubators can increase that rate to an average of 60%, sometimes reaching over 80%. The resulting salmon seem to retain their wild characteristics which are essential to escape predators while providing for themselves in a natural ecosystem.

Up until now, we’ve been operating on a shoestring budget. Our old, outdated equipment needs to be upgraded or replaced but many of these expenses are not covered by our normal source of funds. That’s why we need your help.

Donate today so our group can bring our salmon restoration project to the next level and help safeguard the future of the Atlantic salmon in our region for generations to come.
