Nicaragua Optometric Mission Trip

Dear friends and family,
I am excited to share with you that I will be serving in an optometric mission trip to San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua from January 5th-13th, 2018. Since high school, it has been my dream to provide healthcare to those that lack access by participating in mission trips. Finally I will be able to share my skills and heart for the people in my first mission trip and first time out of the country. For the thousands of people that travel from all parts of Nicaragua, receiving vision care and glasses transforms their daily lives; allowing them to discover a more detailed world for the first time, to learn in school, or to earn a living for their families.
As a second year optometry student, I will be providing free comprehensive eye exams under supervising optometrists along with my team of classmates, fellow optometry students from New York and Massachusetts, opticians, and translators. Glasses and sunglasses will be dispensed along with referrals for ocular surgery to connected medical missions. This will be the 17th annual eye care clinic by VOSH (Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity). Last year, the team of 82 volunteers saw 4,488 patients. We hope to help as many or more this year.
Since most of the money our club fundraises goes toward supplies, each volunteer covers the cost of his or her own trip ($1,600). With the burden of tuition and optometric equipment already in the thousands, I must fundraise in order to attend this mission. If you are willing and able, please consider donating. Any amount is helpful and very much appreciated! I would not be where I am without your prayers and support. Thank you for being a part of my life and in aiding the development of my career. May we help those that cannot help themselves.
