Help Rescue Stray Dogs in Mexico
Donation protected
My name is Elyana Smith. I am a sophomore at Baxter Academy in Portland Maine. For my 2018-2019 Flex Friday* project, I am working with the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland to raise awareness for the ever growing street dog population all over the world. My family and I have been fostering dogs since April of 2016 and have since fostered over 65. over the past couple of years I have become increasingly more interested in how and why dogs end up in shelters. I am especially interested in the way shelters operate in places that have a large street dog population to manage. During the summer of 2019, I will to travel to Mexico alone and work with a rescue through a program organized by Animal Experience International. While in there I will be involved with the whole process from the rescue to the adoption. My goal for this project is to better understand this issue so that I can educate others as well as gain hands-on experience to support my future working with animals.
*Baxter Academy provides many unique opportunities one being Flex Friday. We pick a project at the beginning of the school year that we then work on every Friday for the whole year.
