Who We Are
Vols Against Hunger is a group of four students from the University of Tennessee Knoxville who are raising funds to help support Smokey's Pantry: UT’s first food pantry. We are working with this fine organization because we are passionate about helping our fellow students and the Knoxville community. We strongly believe that everyone deserves food without exceptions.
Smokey’s Pantry is a nonprofit organization that opened in January of 2016 to help address food insecurity in the UT and Knoxville community. The pantry is a collaboration between FISH Hospitality Pantries and UT Tyson Alumni House. On-campus partners include the Office of the Dean of Students, SGA, UT Grow Lab, and UT Recycling. Smokey’s Pantry is committed to serving everyone with respect, regardless of their background.
What We Need
Our objective is to raise $1,000 so the pantry can purchase advertising to increase awareness of its mission. Your donation will ensure that more members of an at-need community are aware of the services available to them. The director of the pantry stated their biggest obstacle is that not enough community members that are in need know of the support the pantry provides. Your contribution will make a difference in the Knoxville community by decreasing food insecurity and help our fellow community members to live a healthier lifestyle.
How it Helps
Your generous donation will allow Smokey’s Pantry to broaden its community outreach efforts to proudly serve the growing nutritional and hygienic needs on the University of Tennessee campus and in the Knoxville community. According to a wuot.org survey, one in three students at the University of Tennessee experience food insecurity; furthermore, the study claims that limited diet choice for food-insecure students can contribute to obesity, diabetes, chronic health and the discomfort of hunger may negatively impact their learning performance.
