Vocabulary Voyagers
We are a team of 3 girls. We are 15 and 16 years old and attend St Mary's Anglican Girls School, in Perth, Western Australia. Last year, when we were in Year 10, we took the subject Creating Apps where we met and became friends. During this course we worked through some of the MIT App Inventor tutorials, utilised several Hour of Code tutorials including Bitsbox and Touch Develop, as well as creating an iOS App to develop some coding skills. It was our first ever experience in coding, we enjoyed this experience very much and so we decided to create an App.
App description: Vocabulary Voyagers is a literacy app targeted at primary school students to improve their literacy reading skills in a fun, digital environment. It offers a range of preset spelling lists based on the Australian national curriculum and NAPLAN tests. The app also includes more challenging lists in order to expand children’s vocabulary. Not only does Vocabulary Voyagers improve children’s spelling and vocabulary, but it also features games directed at improving reading comprehension, with many original stories. With enjoyable mini games and quirky pirates, the app helps children build a foundation to aid in literacy at a secondary level. Our app has had 3000+ downloads.
Vocabulary Voyagers has won numerous awards including Australia’s Search for the Next Tech Girl Superheroes National Winners 2016, Semi-finalists in 2016 Technovation Challenge, 2017 Trailblazers in Technology awarded by Engineers Australia and Best Presentation at 2016 Game Changers awards.
We appreciate any donation, no matter how small, towards our app and oud adventure. Any bit of funding counts and money raised will be used to release our app and pay for some start-up costs.
Money will go towards launching ourselves as a business and take the lite version of our app to the paid version and code it into iOS. All sponsors and donators (unless anonymous) will be publicly acknowledged via our social media. Major Sponsors will also feature on the back of team clothing, in our app and on various types of advertisement. Through our various social media and via our main advocates – Tech Girls Movement and the school community of St Mary’s Anglican Girls’ School, we already have a combined current following of over 10,000 users.
