It Takes a Village: Support Nicole O'Neal & Family

It Takes a Village.

Let me start by saying, Nicole along with her children, Kyler and Amaya are safe and off of Ocracoke. They are with her parents in Virginia Beach. Nicole and her children have lost everything. From the home she provides her family to possibly her vehicle to her job at this time.

Ocracoke is home to Nicole and her family. It is where she has been raised and is raising her family. She is the fifth generation to do so. Kyler is seven years old and is in the first grade at Ocracoke School. Amaya is three and enjoys island life. Nicole is a certified nursing assistant at Ocracoke Health Center.

During Hurricane Dorian, Nicole and her children headed to her Aunt Stephanie's, just next door, to ride out the storm in her elevated, over  100 year old house. The area in which Nicole lives has never flooded. It had also never felt the wrath of Hurricane Dorian.

On Friday, September 6th at 7:04, the eye of Hurricane Dorian passed over the Village of Ocracoke. The worst was yet to come. At 7:50, the water started to rise and within minutes, everything was underwater and the water continued to rise. Nicole moved her children up to the second floor to escape to safety from the raising waters. The water continued to rise and Nicole and children were rescued by boat during the flooding and hurricane winds, thanks to her Uncle Albert O'Neal, and taken to the Ocracoke Volunteer Fire Department.

Nicole and children watched helplessly as her grandparents were evacuated during the storms aftermath by helicopter thanks to the USCG. They are safe and sound at Carolina East in New Bern, NC.

On Saturday, Nicole and children were evacuated and reunited with her parents, leaving behind their home. Nicole and her children came off the Swan Quarter Ferry with only the clothes they were wearing and the two car seats that Nicole was able salvage. Everything else is a complete loss.

Nicole's family has been through hell and back in just a few short days. In all, five homes of the O'Neal family were flood in Hurricane Dorian's wrath. There is no timetable as to when Nicole will even be allowed to return to Ocracoke to start the process of rebuilding. The Ocracoke Health Center was damaged during the storm. The Ocracoke School was also flooded. At this time, there is nowhere to return to.

Grateful would be an understatement. Nicole and her family are all safe. No life was lost on Ocracoke due to Hurricane Dorian. Homes and items can be replaced. It will take time to rebuild. Nicole and her family are Ocracoke Strong.

This fund goes directly to Nicole and her children. The money donated will be used to restart their lives and provide temporary housing.
