On the evening of Saturday, June 14th 2025, our family’s world was shattered. Afa Ah Loo, a loving husband, devoted father, and incredibly gifted fashion designer, was tragically shot and killed during the No Kings protest in Salt Lake City (a peaceful protest) Afa was only 39 years old, and he leaves behind his wife — my dearest big sister and best friend — and their two young children, my beloved niece Vera and nephew Isaac. On FaceTime this morning his daughter, Vera said “wait mom who’s going to make my birthday dress”. His son Isaac, asked if his dad was coming home to help him build the legos (his fav toy and also loves monster trucks, tractors etc..

This devastating loss has left my beautiful sister a widow and a single mother overnight. She is now facing the impossible: grieving the love of her life while trying to care for two little ones and navigate the long road ahead without him.

Afa Ah Loo was the kindest, most gentle man I’ve met, I couldn’t have asked for a better bonus brother and father to my sisters kids. A kind, gentle soul who lit up every room he walked into. He was loved deeply by friends, family, and communities around the world. As a proud Samoan man and a visionary fashion designer, he dreamed big — not just for himself, but for his family, his community. He was building something beautiful, and his life was stolen far too soon. He was 39.

We are urgently raising funds to help cover:

• Funeral and memorial expenses

• Lost income and time off work for my sister as she cares for their children

• Childcare, food, mortgage, and other basic needs in the coming months

• Emotional and mental health support for the family

This tragedy is not only traumatic to my family but a testimony of the instability our country is facing. I am doing everything we can to support my family and honor my brother in law’s memory. Despite it all, we are so overwhelmed and proud of Afa’s dedication to human rights and social justice.
