Dear EVERYONE,

We are raising funds for UP Diliman dormers affected by Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda. This private fund drive started on Nov. 16, two days after my college friend Cathy messaged me through Facebook about the plight of 44 students from Molave, a dormitory inside University of the Philippines Diliman, where we both stayed as upperclassmen from 2008 to 2001. After several mail exchanges with our common friends and fellow dormers, we pooled our personal donations to help these students. We also set-up a Facebook page to post donation updates.

Our Philippine-based team immediately met with Molave dorm manager, Danny Arceo, and the dormers to find out how we can assist. Their immediate financial needs prompted us to expand our fund raising drive by asking donations from non-UP and non-Filipino friends.

However, it was the story of one dormer from Yakal that inspired us to launch this page. Jonathan lost his entire family and home to the typhoon storm surge in Tacloban, and he only received the terrible news on Nov. 14. after days of zero-communication with his family. Despite his enormous personal loss, he intends to continue with his studies this semester. His parents already fully paid his tuition until Jan. 2014. The strength it takes for him to deal with this tragedy and still prioritize his education is truly amazing.

We appeal to each one of you to help these promising students. They are most vulnerable during this time. Let us not allow Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda to crush their dreams. You do not have to be from UP to donate. We encourage everybody who believes in education to support this fund drive.

IT'S TIME TO GIVE BACK AND PAY IT FORWARD! We thought a one-off donation will never be enough; we plan to assist each one for at least three months until they can recover from the aftermath of the typhoon.

WHERE YOUR DONATIONS WILL GO:

100% of your donations will go to the following:

1. To students who lost their homes, your donation will support their living expenses in Manila for the next three months. A student will receive PHP1,000 - P8,000 (24 - USD185) per month depending on their case.

2. To the students who've lost their parents and siblings. We will give them PHP10,000 (USD230) a month for 12 months. We also hope to find a therapist address their emotional and psychological needs.

TRANSPARENCY

This fund serves a specific cause: To provide immediate financial relief to UP Diliman dormers. We ensure transparency in managing your donations. We will distribute in the presence of dorm managers and house parents, and each recipient will sign a document to acknowledge the amount that they received. We are also coordinating with Prof. Gerry Lanuza.
