After I moved to NYC just over a year ago, I knew I wanted to find a way to get more involved in my local community. While NYC is an affluent metro area, it's also home to some of the poorest communities in the U.S.
That is why this year I am serving as a volunteer on the United Way of New York City Women United Host Committee in support of their Annual Power of Women to Make A Difference Award Luncheon.
The Luncheon honors the achievements of exceptional women leaders, whose accomplishments are matched by their commitment to philanthropy, and it supports the United Way's ReadNYC program that helps children read at grade level by grade 3 - the year they transition from learning to read to reading to learn.
In 2013, when United Way began the ReadNYC program in Mott Haven, a neighborhood in the South Bronx, only 9% of 3rd graders in that community were reading on grade level. Today, nearly 50% of participating third graders in ReadNYC are reading proficiently.
I first got involved with United Way as a college student. I interned at their headquarters in Alexandria, VA and I have experienced first-hand how well-connected the organization is in each of the local communities they serve; they know and can work well with other non-profits, local government, the school system, and industry to serve their constituents. I appreciate their focus on finding what works and using the power of their network to scale it. ReadNYC is a great example of those efforts at their best!
