Over the past 3 years, UMRio has provided a rare safe space of hope and encouragement for over 300 young people in Morro do Castro (an isolated favela in São Gonçalo - RJ) where they can access new opportunities, develop and pursue aspirations, and build confidence in their own identities. UMRio’s holistic 4 pillar methodology (click here to learn more: http://umrio.org/index.php/methodology/) has won international awards and been the subject of educational research of Brazil’s foremost universities. While we have achieved important results over the past few years with no external funding, this year we are working to guarantee the programme’s sustainability through a one-off fundraising drive that will run between now and April 2017.
To keep the programme running and help create more opportunities for young people in Rio de Janeiro, we have set an ambitious target of securing £15,000.
We hope to raise a total of £15,000 which will secure the programmes continuity for the next 12 months. In these 12 months UMRio is looking to:
· Guarantee continuity of current operations
· Strengthen our mentoring programme, by providing 100% of our 17+ year olds with personal mentors who will help them study for national university entry exams;
· Secure general health check-ups which have been largely focused on dental care
· Secure sustainable funding streams for our 2017/20 Strategic Development Plan, which includes creating a permanent UMRio Centre, 3 salaried positions, and designing a model that can be replicated beyond Morro do Castro.
