The catastrophic event last week at the port of Beirut, the capital city of Lebanon, has captured the hearts of people worldwide. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the families affected by this heartbreaking tragedy.
The nation had already been reeling from a severe economic downturn and the impact of this disaster is nothing short of a humanitarian crisis. Casualties are on the rise, as the explosion damaged hospitals and left the city without power, making it incredibly difficult to treat thousands injured in the blast.
My brother Nassim Said and I immigrated to Australia from Lebanon 20 years ago, and like so many of our fellow Lebanese community members, thousands of our family and friends residing in our beautiful country of birth have been devastatingly affected. They have lost their homes and businesses and are in need of urgent help to feed their loved ones.
