UIS Campus Community Garden

The garden started out as a class project for ENS 271 Introduction to Sustainability. In that class, we sketched out a rough plan for the garden.

Towards the end of that semester, we started discussing logistics and formed a leadership committee of students and a faculty advisor. In January, we began meeting weekly to plan. In February, we ordered seeds and started our seedlings in the greenhouse.

UIS Grounds Crew tilled the land for us and we built our garden beds.

Our plants grew up happy and green and were planted in the ground mid-April.

After months of planning, the garden is finally a reality!

The intention of the UIS Campus Community Garden is to serve as a model of sustainability, to build community by providing a shared space for students and faculty to come together, to provide hands-on learning opportunities, to promote UIS by demonstrating our commitment to sustainability and student involvement opportunities, and to provide local food for campus dining.

Our main goal with fundraising is to purchase supplies for the garden. Money has and will be spent on supplies such as soil, compost, tools, seeds, plants, and more.

We are so grateful for all the support we have received thus far and appreciate your financial support as well!
