Sarah's Fund to Volunteer in Uganda

Donation protected
Dear friends and family,

This coming January I will be traveling to northern Uganda to volunteer with a local educational leadership program called The Child is Innocent. I’ll be in Gulu, Uganda for two weeks as one of 5 non-Ugandan volunteers with TCII’s training program for the brightest and most disadvantaged teenagers in this region. You may remember hearing about the rebel insurgency in northern Uganda (the Lord’s Resistance Army, Joseph Kony), which saw some 2 million people from this region displaced and tens of thousands kidnapped, mutilated, and killed. The specific area that I will be in – Gulu and the surrounding villages – was one of, if not the most affected, and the recovery process is very much on-going. TCII, which was founded by Ugandans in 2004, is the only educational leadership program of its kind in northern Uganda. TCII has a very small pool of volunteers that come from the U.S. and Canada each year to help with their training program, and I’m lucky enough to be part of this group for the first time in January 2018!

Over the next 10 weeks (leading up to January 11, 2018), I am trying to raise $2,000 to fund what I hope will be the first of many trips to northern Uganda to help with TCII initiatives. This money will be used to fund the expenses associated with the trip, namely travel/airfare; any additional money raised will go directly to TCII and supporting the most talented and needy young people in this region. In addition to serving as a volunteer facilitator during the training program itself, I am also currently working on the curriculum design and beginning to formulate a plan for measurement and evaluation of TCII, which will hopefully gather data that can be used in grant applications for funding that will allow TCII to sustain and expand its work in the years to come. I’m thrilled to be able to bring my background in education, research, and grant writing to such an important cause.

Any amount of support would mean the world to me!

With gratitude,
Sarah

TCII student Awkero Stella:

“My name is Stella. At the time of writing this, I am 9 years old. I stay in an area where we were displaced from our original village Pabbo. I have been in school for 3 years and think school is good because afterward I may get some employment. In my free time, I enjoy skipping rope! I lost all my parents due to HIV and now I live with my fellow brothers alone without a helper. In the future, I would like to become a teacher and teach others. It is my dream.”
